The Selling of Droids

As this crops up every now and again, we would like to clarify the rules of selling droids and building droids to order.
DroidBuilders.uk are a droid building community, here to help others with their personal builds. Whether it be methods of building, where to source parts, 3d printing, electronics, painting and any other aspects related to the building of your droid. Once you have made it as far as completing your droid, we are here to continue to support all our fellow builders as much as we can, this includes MOTing your droid whether it remote control or static, giving you annual PLI Cover to attend events with fellow droid builders.

The selling of droids however is not acceptable. Whether it be making complete droids to order or the selling of kits for people to build. There are many reasons for this, so to explain, here are a few….

  1. Lucasfilm issue licenses to companies who sell Star Wars related products of which they pay a lot of money for. Any company selling droids such as Sideshow Collectables and Disney would hold a license to do so.
  2. Yes, Lucasfilm likes us to build our own droids, but we are treading a fine line when it comes to selling parts, offering part runs and sharing files to print our droids. These are all aimed at helping a builder to complete their own builds and not to facilitate people making money by selling complete kits or droids.
  3. From experience we have had people come to us over the years who have bought droids from eBay, Etsy, Marketplace etc. The buyer usually has no knowledge or interest in droid building and then expects everything to be easy and work without any maintenance.

As far as the sale of personal droids goes, this is acceptable, within reason. It’s your business what you chose to do with own builds, if however you are regularly building your own droid and then selling on, this is not acceptable. Like some other Star Wars groups, we are fortunate to be recognised by Lucasfilm and have been fortunate enough to attend some high-profile events such as Red carpet events, press junkets, product launches & live TV to name a few. We would like to keep this level of respect between Lucasfilm and Droid Builders. It would be a shame for some people to ignore these rules and spoil it for everyone else. Therefore, anyone in this group continuing to break these rules will be removed from DroidBuilders.uk and our Portal.
